Spain’s flag consists of three horizontal stripes – a red stripe at both the top and bottom, with a yellow stripe (twice the width of the red) in the center. Toward the left and centered in the yellow stripe is the nation’s coat of arms, which is made up of a crowned shield, quartered (each quarter is displaying the badges of original Spanish kingdoms) and flanked by crowned pillars representing Gibraltar and Ceuta. Wrapped around the pillars is a red scroll with the motto “Plus Ultra,” which translates to “there is more beyond.” This flag was formally adopted in 1981 – however, there is also a Spanish civil flag which, while identical in format, does not display the coat of arms.
